Nativitas
(15 November until 13 December food; 15 November until 24 December funds)
The cold winter months are long and hard for the homeless and needy, when many people are having a hard time feeding their families and making ends meet. Through our mission partner NATIVITAS, a local soup kitchen and food pantry in Brussels, we can make a difference!
Our children will coordinate our annual food drive collecting non-perishable foods. A flyer is at the welcome table and suggestions can be found below. Everything we collect will be distributed to the families who turn to Nativitas for help. They will take their packages home to prepare their own meals.
Items especially needed by the food pantry are such non-perishable foods like:
- Canned items: vegetables, soup, fruit, tuna, salmon, sardines, nuts
- Cartons of soup, milk, juice (must have a long conservation date)
- Pasta, rice, barley, potato flakes, couscous, lentils, dried beans
- Oil, coffee, sugar, cereal, cocoa, jam, Nutella, cookies, chocolate
Nativitas has requested that we avoid donating items with the entire meal in one can (ravioli, stews, etc) since there are many different ethnic groups with different dietary restrictions. Also please do not donate products that have already been opened, or that have an expired expiration date. Thanks so much for your help!
The adults also have the opportunity to make a financial donation, either by using the mission envelopes (please mark it “Nativitas”) or by bank transfer from mid November thru the end of December. This money will be used to purchase much needed fresh food for Nativitas.
Last year IPC collected nearly 500 kg of food and provided funding for one month’s fresh food!
Here is a little leaflet that Nancy has put together with some photos, to give you a better idea of Nativitas:
